Membership in McLean Bar Association
Membership Criteria

Excerpts from Article III of the Bylaws of the McLean Bar Association

The Association shall have members which shall be divided into three classes designated, respectively, “Regular,” “Associate,” and “Honorary.” A description of the three classes of membership is as follows:

(a) Regular Members
Any lawyer who is a member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing:

  • (i) who is engaged in the private practice of law within the geographical area encompassed by postal zip code 22101 may become a Regular of this Association by paying the initiation fee, if any, and the current year’s dues; and
  • (ii) such Associate members as the Board of Director may, from time to time, designate as Regular Members, not to exceed ten (10) at any time, upon a resolution by the Board of Directors that such Associate Members have demonstrated a commitment to the Association and whose admission would be a significant benefit to the Association. Such designation of an Associate Member as a Regular Member shall be effective until the first meeting of the next succeeding Board of Directors. A Designated Regular Member may be re-designated in successive years without limitation.

(b) Associate Members
Any lawyer who is a member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing who lives within the geographical area encompassed by postal zip code 22101, or who is either engaged in the private practice of law or lives within the geographical area encompassed by postal zip code 22102 may become an Associate Member of the Association by paying the initiation fee, if any, and the current year’s dues. An Associate Member shall be required to pay dues but shall not have the right to vote or hold elective office unless designated a Regular Member as provided above.

(c) Honorary Members
The Justices of the Virginia Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals, the Judges of any Virginia Circuit Court and the full-time Judges of any Virginia General District Court and of any Virginia Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, the Clerk of any Virginia Circuit Court, and such other persons as the Board of Directors may, from time to time, designate to be Honorary Members by the Board of Directors. Honorary Members shall not be required to pay dues and shall not have the right to vote.
